This guide describes Silent Key’s actual product model and the general privacy concepts around it. It avoids guarantees the service cannot technically make.
Creation and the expiry timestamp
When a new Silent Key message is written, the record includes its content, sender, conversation reference and timing information. The application also assigns an expiry timestamp approximately seven days after creation. That timestamp gives the interface and maintenance process a shared rule for deciding when the message is no longer active.
An expiry timestamp is data about when removal should occur. It is not a magical deletion event. Devices can be offline, scheduled maintenance can be delayed and a database request can fail. A trustworthy temporary-messaging design therefore needs more than one layer.
Defensive hiding in the interface
The client checks message timing when it reads a conversation. If a message is already expired, the interface can omit it even when the database record has not yet been physically deleted. The same defensive check applies to conversation previews so an expired last message does not remain visible in the chat list.
This layer improves the user-visible result during cleanup delays. It does not mean the record has vanished from every system. Until cleanup succeeds, authorized database access may still encounter the stored record. The difference between “not shown” and “deleted from storage” matters.
Administrative cleanup
Maintenance scans eligible messages in bounded batches and deletes expired records. Batching avoids attempting an enormous operation at once and makes failures easier to recover from. Cleanup may be run manually or through an administrative process, so the exact deletion second is not guaranteed.
After deletion, Silent Key examines affected conversations and recalculates summary fields. This repair step is easy to overlook, which is why stale previews survive in many small chat projects. A reliable cleanup process must update both the message collection and any denormalized data that depended on the deleted message.
Why the conversation remains
A conversation record represents the participant connection and contains summary information used by the chat list. Silent Key intentionally preserves that record when all messages are gone. The participants therefore keep an empty chat connection instead of losing one another because history expired.
When no active message remains, the repair process clears preview text, preview time, last sender and unread counts. Preserving the connection while clearing derived message state avoids the contradictory result of an empty chat displaying an old final message.
Copies outside the service
No retention timer can delete a screenshot, photograph, copied paragraph, notification preview or external backup controlled by another person. A recipient can preserve content before expiry. Browser caches and device backups may also outlive the visible message. Reports and moderation records may retain information needed to investigate abuse.
Temporary messaging is therefore best understood as automatic history reduction inside the service. It lowers the amount of old conversation kept in the normal interface and database, but it cannot guarantee universal erasure.
A practical user rule
Use temporary chat for conversations where limited history is convenient, not where future deletion is the only thing preventing serious harm. Keep your own copy of information you genuinely need. Assume recipients can preserve what they see. For highly sensitive communication, choose a mature, independently audited end-to-end encrypted service with a threat model that matches the risk.
